Frequently Asked Questions
Gutter Basics
Why do I need gutters?
Gutters play a crucial role in maintaining the integrity of a building’s structure and protecting it from water damage. Gutters collect rainwater from the roof and direct it away from the building’s foundation. They help protect against staining, rotting, and deterioration of siding, windows, doors and fascia boards. They also help control the flow of rainwater, preventing soil erosion around the perimeter of the building and protecting the landscaping. Properly functioning gutters and downspouts will help reduce the risk of basement flooding during heavy rainfall or melting snow.
What is a fascia?
The fascia is a long, straight board that runs along the lower edge of the roof. It is typically mounted onto the ends of the roof rafters or trusses and extends horizontally to cover the ends of the roof structure.
Fascia boards come in a variety of shapes and profiles, with some homes having more than one type along different areas of the home. Fascia’s can have a shadow board, be slanted or have decorative molding. The shape of the fascia board is important, as it will determine how we are able to fasten the gutters to the building.
How will you attach the gutters?
With a flat fascia that is perpendicular to the ground, the gutters are hung with internal hangers spaced approximately 16 inches and fastened with 1.5-inch hex head screws.
With slanted fascia or decorative molding, 5/4 thick never rot blocks (PVC material) will need to be manufactured on site and installed approximately every 16 inches to fasten the gutter to for proper orientation and optimal function.
In the case of exposed rafter tails, we would hang the gutters using a rod and nut roof suspension system.
Are downspouts included in the price?
We use 3×4 inch downspouts, one size up from the industry standard 2×3 inch. These downspouts handle a larger volume of water, with one downspout managing runoff for a run of gutter up to 60 feet in length. We include downspouts using this principle, however any additional downspouts requested by the client beyond what is needed will incur a fee.
